This charming cottage, nestled on a bluff along the Lake Michigan shore, was created as a weekend
retreat for its occupants, a young married couple.  Gaily-coloured floral chintz fabrics combine with
solid denim covers for a look both casual yet hardy.  Vintage upholstered furnishings, salvaged from
attics, tag sales & junkyards, were reupholstered & repadded to provide comfort for their new
owners;  antique wooden tables were rescued from years of neglect & either refinished to highlight
their natural sheen or repainted to show off their bold use of form.
An antique plate is a
charming home to a
starfish family, a
reminder of summers
past & present.
A treasured collection of vintage wool blankets is ideal for warding off chills on long winter nights.
Bright colours & textures add a visual treat.
Evening approaches;  golden light spills across the red floral chintz draperies & the blue
shirting-stripe shades, glowing with the last flame of the sun.
These exuberantly
carved stretchers have
been revitalized by a
new finish of lacquer
red paint.
This wing-chair was salvaged from a neighbor's attic;  reupholstered & refitted, it enjoys new life in
a heavy navy wool plaid.  A collection of vintage throws & ticking-stripe pillows ensures comfort.
The Dining-Room:  an oasis of comfort & colour, accented by neutral yet lovely creamware.  A
tablecloth swathed in denim is at both colourful & durable.  In keeping with the casual theme of
this cottage, Sanjay used simple navy cotton for the draperies with a red floral chintz for the shades
to catch the light.  Blue-and-white mattress ticking, salvaged from a church sale, makes a useful,
easy-to-use seat cushion & back;  red floral chintz adds a splash of colour to the arms.
Oh, the warm,lazy
summer evenings on
the porch, relaxing
with friends over
dinner & drinks....
The Owner's collection of vintage creamware china, collected over many years, is an effectively
neutral foil for the vibrant, festive colours used in this room.  Of special note is the red silk shade
on an antique silver floor lamp.
A burst of tulips
creates a splash of
creamy white in this
gaily-coloured setting
of red chintz & blue
denim.
Fully rigged and ready to weigh anchor, this large model sailboat has its course set for the lake, just
a few steps away.  An antique china hutch holds both the ship and the Owner's serving dishes, plus
a special tea service from England.
A heavy cable-knit
blanket in midnight
blue cotton ensures
warmth on even the
coldest nights.
The Master Bedroom:  A delightful melange of sun-washed denim, chambray, tartan plaids &
softly shaded florals.  An antique wrought-iron bed and a charming Man-in-the-Moon mirror
ensure a gentle night's slumber.  Teddy-bears playfully abound in this casual retreat.
A collection of vintage photographs in old silver frames is serenely cool yet strangely captivating.
This antique dresser, bench-made of solid walnut, boasts vintage weathered brass hardware.
Pinecones gathered on
autumn hikes along
the sand dunes cluster
in an antique bowl.
A very old, very precious Persian carpet is the perfect backdrop to this contemporary bedskirt in cool
blue washed chambray.
The Guest-Room:  A crisp & cool bedroom, in patriotic-inspired colours of red, white & blue, but
softened for weekend use.  Red quilting, blue-and-white ticking, & even a blue floral Provencal
chintz are all combined to create a refreshing & inviting look.  Vintage buffalo-plaid wool blankets
& white-painted antique furniture are charming yet casual.
Jonathan really loves
his new home;  we
found him in a shop
just waiting to be
rescued!
This combination of Provencal blue floral chintz, a deep red buffal-plaid wool blanket, and
diamond-quilted blue-and-white ticking is irresistible & comfortable.
The warmth of this
silk shade creates a
welcoming glow for
late-night reading.
Even the rug in this charming country bedroom is part of the overall scheme;  in deep red cotton
braid, it anchors & organizes the white-painted bedroom furniture.
